320,000 Jardine Cribs Recalled

Jardine announced the recall today of 320,000 Berkley, Hilton, Positano, Spindle, and Windsor (certain model numbers only) cribs sold through Toys"R"Us and Babies"R"Us because of entrapment hazards from broken slats and spindles. The company has 42 reports of breakage, 4 entrapments and 2 injuries. Customers can return the crib to Jardine for a voucher for a new crib from Toys"R"Us or Babies"R"Us. More details here and here. Please let KID know if you have any questions or problems with the recall.

In order to get a new crib, I need to be without one for 1-2 weeks. It may be more dangerous for my baby to get a new crib than to keep the one we have.

This is a dilemma with recalls of cribs and other sleep products. We recommend that newborns stay in bassinets and older babies can sleep for a few weeks in a portable crib or playpen such as a pack and play. Check the alternative product at cpsc.gov to make sure it isn't recalled! Portable cribs and play yards that are new or only a couple years old and are JPMA certified have been tested to be used as a sleep environment. The recalled crib is NOT safe for babies to stay in. Defects such as the broken spindles or slats can happen with little warning, putting your child at risk.
